Safety tips for Ecuador
Hands-on safety advice for your carefree trip through Ecuador.
Easy-to-follow safety tips for your Ecuador vacation
Ecuador is overall a very safe travel destination. The Galapagos Islands are one of the safest places in the world and crime is virtually non-existent. For continental Ecuador, the most common crimes, especially in major cities and crowded tourist areas, are petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag-snatching. To keep yourself and your belongings safe, be street-smart and follow these safety tips:
Keep valuables safe – Don’t wear flashy jewelry. Avoid displaying your camera and cell phone in the streets. In crowded places, keep your backpack in front of you. Only take small amounts of cash on outings, leave the rest in a safe at your lodging. Keep your passport safe (You should always carry a photo ID.)
Stay alert and informed – Be aware of your surroundings. Your guide will keep you updated on any particular precautions you should take and tourist scams to avoid.
Getting around – Don’t wander around at night and in deserted areas. Avoid public transportation. Taxis are inexpensive (short rides are $1.50, a 25-minute ride is approx. $5), just make sure that the taximeter is on (“taxímetro por favor” = taximeter please). Ask the place where you are at (hotel, restaurant, etc.) to call a taxi for you. Uber works in Ecuador, too. Avoid long-distance trips at night.
Food – Don’t accept food and drinks from strangers. Avoid uncooked street food. Only drink bottled or purified water.
Lodging – If you book your own accommodations, make sure that they are reputable and lie in a safe area. Feel free to ask us for advice and recommendations.
