What You Will See & Do

Activities in the jungle are very weather-dependent. This is the lodge’s standard 4-night program which is always subject to change:

Day 1 – Your journey begins at 11 AM at “El Puente’, the main entrance to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. This will be your last point of contact with civilization as you know it on the trip! You will continue by motorized canoe down the Cuyabeno river for about 2 and a half hours until we reach the Nicky Amazon Lodge. With a little luck we’ll be able to observe monkeys and bird species along the way. The Cuyabeno river is narrow in the upper part so you’ll be able to experience wildlife up close. You will be welcomed at the lodge with a cocktail to celebrate your arrival. Shortly afterwards you will have time to rest before going on your first activity to enjoy the surroundings. Before dinner we will go on a night walk to watch for different species of insects, spiders, tree frogs and others. After dinner your bilingual guide will tell you about the activities for the following days.

Day 2 – Early in the morning before breakfast, we’ll explore the area in search of monkeys and birds in the tropical rainforest. When we return for breakfast you’ll have time to replenish your energy and relax before we go on a walk through the rainforest, during which your bilingual guide will share all his knowledge and experiences. You’ll learn how the most diverse life forms can coexist and survive in nature side by side within a delicate balance. We may spot colorful butterflies, frogs and listen to some birds as we learn more about the great variety of flora.

We’ll return to the lodge for lunch. Afterwards, you’ll have some time to rest, by way of enjoying the surrounding nature, playing soccer, or just taking a pleasant nap. In the afternoon we’ll take a trip by paddle canoe down the Cuyabeno River taking us through the dense jungle landscape. We’ll observe the wildlife found on the riverbanks, including monkeys, macaws, toucans and sloths. We’ll have a good chance to see the pink river dolphins in the impressive river landscape. After dinner, we’ll explore the lodge’s surroundings to look for nocturnal animals such as insects, spiders, snakes and frogs, all life that becomes active when the sun sets.

Day 3 – After breakfast, today’s immersive activity is a visit to an Indigenous Siona community to share in their daily life in the Amazon Basin. We’ll have a demonstration on how to make ‘Cassave’, the typical manioc bread of the region. We will also learn about the local customs and traditions of their past and present culture, before returning to our own lodging community for lunch.

In the afternoon we’ll travel by motorized canoe up the Cuyabeno River to reach the Laguna Grande. As we explore the lagoon, we’ll learn about the ‘Igapó’, the ecosystem of the flooded forest that is dominated by giant macrolobium trees which provide habitat for epiphytes and some species of birds such as cormorants. After exploring the lagoon, we can swim in the calm waters while watching the spectacular sunset of the Amazon region. Later we’ll continue our adventure observing the nocturnal fauna of the river landscape with some species of bats, and we will also look for caimans on the way down to the Lodge. Once we arrive back at the lodge it’ll be time for dinner.

Day 4 – In the morning we’ll have the opportunity for an additional excursion, either in our canoe or hiking. The choice depends on the weather conditions and the interests of the group. After breakfast, we’ll explore the forest. Our guide will tell you more about the medicinal use of the flora as it has been used by native cultures for generations, and how they could survive in the jungle. We’ll return to our lodging community for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll explore the stunning Cuyabeno River by canoe to enjoy the views of its exceptional scenery, and listen to the sounds of the jungle as we look for exotic local species. This is a once-in-a-lifetime excursion that will leave you with long-lasting memories.

Day 5 – Today you’ll have the option of a morning excursion that includes a short trip by canoe. We will look around and try to find species of monkeys and birds, and maybe sloths in the surroundings of this spectacular place too. After breakfast you will have time to pack your luggage for the return journey. We provide a box lunch for the trip back. The ride takes you upstream back to the Cuyabeno bridge “Puente de Cuyabeno” where you arrive at around 10:30 AM and your jungle tour ends.
