Puerto Villamil is the third largest town in the Galapagos Islands and with its long white-sand beach, it is probably the most picturesque one. There are many interesting sites in Villamil Port that can be visited. Cruises usually include a visit to the tortoise breeding center and the wetlands. At the breeding center, you can watch hatchlings, juvenile and adult tortoises from different Isabela Island volcanoes. A trail leads from the breeding center to the wetlands where you can observe ducks, shorebirds and probably flamingos. A fascinating historical site is the Wall of Tears which is located a little outside of Puerto Villamil. The wall is a reminder of the penal colony that operated on Isabela Island between 1944 and 1959. |
