| The name of Bachas Beach at the northern coast of Santa Cruz Island has an interesting background story. The US army used the proximate Baltra Island as a military base to protect the Panama Channel during World War II. After the war, the US army left the military base to the Ecuadorian government and abandoned some of their equipment including two barges. The remains of these barges can still be seen at the beach. As locals could not pronounce the word barges properly, they named the beach Bachas. Close to the disembarking area, there is a small lagoon where you can observe water and shorebirds, with some luck even flamingos. |
